Gospel Returns to the African American Festival

P. Kenneth Burns / WYPR

Gospel singer and Baltimore native Randy Roberts of The Choir Boyz serenaded the audience and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake Wednesday as she announced the line-up for the 2014 African American Festival which includes gospel stars for the first time in several years.

The Choir Boyz will open the gospel part of the festival for singer and “Preachers of L.A.” star Deitrick Haddon.

Shelonda Stokes, producer of the event, called bringing gospel back to the festival this year tremendous.  She credited the Rev. Dr. Jamal H. Bryant, pastor of the Empowerment Temple AME Church, for assisting with getting the word out to churches about this year’s festival.

The festival, scheduled for June 21-22 at Camden Yards, will have R&B artists Mint Condition and Brandy as the main attractions on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Organizers promise to announce more features leading up to the event.

In addition to performances, there will be exhibits on health, wellness and wealth creation and a flag football skills workshop presented by former Washington Redskins star LeVar Arrington.
