Gun violence surged in Baltimore between June 19 and June 29 this year, with 14 homicides and 15 non-fatal shootings in that 10-day stretch.

The shootings come five years after the city health department created Safe Streets, a program aimed at preventing such violence by hiring ex-offenders to mediate conflicts in high crime neighborhoods, focusing on youth ages 15-24. According to the department, they have conducted more than 750 mediations at four sites since opening in 2007.

The map below locates the homicides (red pins) and the nonfatal shootings (blue pins) in relation to the Safe Streets sites.  Click inside the blue blocks for details about each site.   We’ll continue to update the map.

According to the Center for Disease Control, homicide is the third leading cause of death for youth ages 15 to 24, regardless of race or ethnicity. When rates are separated by race or ethnicity, homicide is the leading cause of death for African-American youth ages 15-34. So far this year, 101 homicide victims in Baltimore have been age 34 or younger.
