After Governor O'Malley's last signing ceremony yesterday, the fate of just one bill was left undecided: a bill that would delay the construction of 25 towering wind turbines on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Today, O'Malley vetoed the bill - which allows the project to move forward as planned. WYPR Senior News Analyst Fraser Smith sat down with state house reporter Christopher Connelly to discuss the decision.

A Rhode Island company was the highest bidder in the federal government's first-ever auction for the right to build an offshore wind farm.

After 11 rounds, Deepwater Wind outbid two other companies for two patches of ocean off the coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The winning bid was $3.8 million.

O'Malley Hopes Wind Will Buoy State

On the morning after the General Assembly adjourned, Governor Martin O’Malley signed scores of bills into law, grouping them in a category of creating jobs. The highlight of the bill crop was O’Malley’s proposal to encourage development of wind turbines off the coast of Ocean City.


“The heart of all new job creation really is innovation, innovation in terms of the things we make and how we make them. In this case, renewable energy.”
