Last Act For Baltimore’s Last Video Store

They weren’t singing in the rain, but the forty people lined up outside Video Americain in Roland Park were having a pretty good time talking movies while they waited for the sale to begin. Video Americain opened its doors Friday afternoon to sell off its stock. All 15,000 videos must go.

Donna Sauter came with a list. “Slumdog Millionaire, To Kill a Mockingbird, Children of Heaven, Miracle on 34th Street, then Disney - 101 Dalmations, Mary Poppins, Snow White, that’s a bunch," she said.

Video Americain has been operating in the tiny space on Cold Spring Lane for a quarter century. But like other video stores, it lost business to internet services like Netflix. People crowded shoulder to shoulder, combing the shelves. The store had stacked empty cardboard boxes near the door, and customers filled them with movies.

Owners Barry and Annie Solan manned the counter, fielding questions about where to find movies and how much they cost. They plan to keep selling until March.
